Walking and cycling is on the one hand the most basic and traditional form of transportation and on the other hand the most efficient form of transport for short distances. Therefore it is important to cater for the needs of pedestrians and cyclists in order to offer safe and functioning infrastructure. Non-motorised transport (NMT) must be developed and enhanced as an alternative to using cars and therefore relieve the pressure on the city’s transportation system, which is dominated by motorized transport.

With almost 30% of traffic users being dependent on walking and cycling and NMT modes being the most affordable mode of transport for 87% of the population in Windhoek, the provision of proper NMT infrastructure is of high importance for a secure and functioning transportation system in Windhoek. In order to comply with the needs of an improved infrastructure, in particular for cyclists, the City of Windhoek in cooperation with the Ministry of Works and Transport and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH are about to construct cycle lanes along Monte Christo Road.

Support from private and public sector is important. One of the core advocacy groups of cycling empowerment in Windhoek and driving force for sustainable transport is the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) Namibia. BEN Namibia aims to empower disadvantaged Namibians through provision of sustainable transport and bicycle-related income generation opportunities and to promote cycling as a healthy, affordable, sustainable and dignified means of transport. As such they also offer second hand bicycles throughout Namibia.
