Successful launch- First meeting of the Sustainable Urban Transport Steering Committee

On Wednesday October 14th, a great milestone for the Sustainable Urban Transport Master Plan was reached. For the first time the Sustainable Urban Transport Steering Committee (SUTSC) for the Implementation of the Master Plan came together. Honorable Minister of Works and Transport Alpheus !Naruseb officially launched the significant meeting. The event was well attended by more than 30 representatives of the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, the City of Windhoek, the towns of Okahandja and Rehoboth and the GIZ.

 

The Steering Committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport, Mr Willem Goeiemann, acts as an integral part within the steering body of the comprehensive sustainable urban transport structure. The Committee’s scope of responsibilities composes the provision of direction and strategic guidance to the Sustainable Urban Transport Committee (SUTC), the project coordinating unit, reviewing and approval of reports and directing and monitoring tasks of the whole steering body.

 

Firstly, giving an overview and status of the Sustainable Urban Transport Master Plan, the meeting reached to draft rules of procedure for the SUTSC and defined areas of intervention for the SUTC according to the implementation plan. Moreover, financing and funding options for the Implementation of the Sustainable Urban Transport Master Plan were discussed.

 

It is undeniable that this meeting was a landmark for the Sustainable Urban Transport Master Plan, its outcome, though, will determine the success of the future implementation process. Results can be expected soon as the next meeting is already set up for end of November.
